The serfs were of the same race as the higher class, the only thing that separated the two parties were the social rankings, which were based on wealth. WebHowever, in Russia serfdom started and ended much later. Serfdom had existed in Russia since 1649, when a legal code granted landowners complete authority over the peasants who lived on their land. This meant that landowners had full control over these people's lives and work, including their right to move elsewhere.
